Well proper way to do it is to check cam chain deflection between cams. But since 300ex's and 400ex's for that matter have a single cam there is no set in stone way to know its perfect. The best you can do is install it with alittle tension and start it and turn it while it idles out till you hear some chain slap and then back in about a turn from there. That has been my method and it hasnt failed me yet. The first on i installed i did the other way and turned it in till it had a whine like a race car blower then backed it out a full turn. And that one did eventually eat a timing chain guide after alot of years of riding.

Slammed' , Can I ask , How often do you have to readjust the manual tensioner ? ---- I have thought of using a manual adjuster before on my 300's and was told they need to be adjusted almost ever run, sounds right ??

I used to run one on my last 300. I did periodically adjust it. I as well adjusted off of the sound... The quad I have now, I left it stock...

You can get a manual adjuster cheap , and seems you can go a bit past the max adjustment of the automatic adjuster , the way I burn up timing chains it might be helpful in going that extra mile ----my Blue 300 be's on the down list from a jumped timing chain ---- I don't know if it is over size tires , gear reduction , heavy on the throttle , hot and cold going from in and out of water , but I eat up timing chains ----Slammed' , I read you change you timing chain pretty regular ?

Well for the 400ex's that i build there is an upgrade to a crf450 timing chain that will pretty much end the need to change one again. But the stock 400ex chains stretch very very fast.

I upgraded to a TRX250ES timing chain and still wear them out --- I think my problem might be similar to yours , I do a lot of extreme fluctuations on the throttle , going from wide open to let totally off and back on again a lot

Yeah im known to be wide open pretty much everywhere. I tend to eat tires pretty quick because they are just spinning the whole time. Alot of times i dont even let off for corners. Just lean and pin it lol

with me , a lot of times it is nail it and keep momentum going as long as your in the ruts , but in some spots it is wide open and let off , again , again and again > trying to spin bigger tires might look for the weakest link and the chain is it , who knows ---- I know I wear them out , OEM , DID , OEM 250 ES , don't matter ------ maybe I need to go with push rod engines , at least the chain isn't as long
