My 250 Recon's recoil starter rope pulled out and wouldn't go back in (mud had dried to dirt). I took it off, held it in a bucket of water and pulled it 20 times till the water turned dark brown and it started retracting again. I let it dry and sprayed down the spring area with WD-40 to help prevent rust and put it back on. Now when bike is running I hear a metal clinking sound like something is hitting on the flywheel. I can twitch the recoil rope and it will stop but if I drive it a little ways, it starts again. Is there a certain way that has to fit back together? It seemed to slide right back in place and the recoil starter works??? Any help will be appreciated. Trying to avoid a trip to the shop.
Thanks!

Well, I pulled the pull starter off and cleaned the cam and other small parts inside that move around and put a little lithium grease on them and it seems to be working with no clinking sound. Maybe just needed repositioning??? Rope needs tightening (handle hangs down a little) but I hate to think about unleashing that spring and trying to tighten it up more!
Thanks!

Yep, that will work. Pain beat me to it. LOL. As long as you have a long enough rope, that will work.

Hey - this is Louisiana summer - that rope was dry 10 minutes after I took it out of the bucket (of course since it's Louisiana, it will be wet again in a day or so!). Thanks - re-knotting it worked out great. I'm rolling again. :icon_ banana:
