help a newbee please

hi all i am new to the Forums and new at having a quad..:sad
Anyway i bought a used 2006 honda rancher trx400fga from a friend that needs work..it sat for 2 years without use..it would not start i took off the carb and cleaned it got it running not new idles little high..anyway i tried to put the shifter into drive and reverse it just grinds and won't go in to gear ..like i said im new to quads and stupid with them as you hear..Question is there a clutch on it when putting in gear on the main shifter? Also missing the brake cable on the left side of the handle bar when shitting on the quad..i ordered one and don't know where it goes? if you understand what i saying please help..i looked on the internet could not find and info i need

X2 to what these others said about idle speed and checking oil lever. There is no clutch lever to pull for putting in gear. The only clutch on these 400FA's is an automatic centrifugal clutch.

You may also want to check the shifter cable adjustment though, should be covered in the service manual.

These 400FA's are finicky and it sounds like yours was neglected at best. We'll help you through it though.
