Welcome to the forums. Did you take that little cover off the left side cover at the end of the starter and remove the reduction gear that the starter shaft turns? It has to come off first and then you can wiggle the starter out.

The picture below shows the gear that needs to come off to remove the starter. It's labeled "gear A/B".

Wow that was fast. All I've done so far was take the two bolts off the back that hold the starter in place. Do I need any special tools to remove that gear?
No special tools, just unbolt that cover and the gear will pull off easily. Be careful that no washers fall down into the engine. Also, that shaft that the gear is on may pull out with the gear, but that won't hurt anything.
