So I put the pull start kit on my 16 420 rancher a couple of months ago. Tested by hand starting and power, then parked in the garage for a while waiting for deer season. Deer season is here, fired it up, let it idle and now is howling from the rear bearing next to the pull start. Remove pull start, idle for a bit and the pull start pulley is warm. Bearing not getting oil. Is it possible to install the oil seal to far in and block an oil passage? I'm going to uninstall and remove the seal and go from there, any other opinions

no, you can't install the oil seal too far, it only keeps stuff from getting in, not from coming out.

With much embarrassment the pulley wasn't properly seated into the crankshaft end. Its squared off and sort of stepped as it goes in. Somehow I got it wrong, most likely inducing a wobble, which knocked the cage loose around the bearing located in the aft case. After I pulled the seal some cage pieces came out so the bearing needs to be replaced. Hopefully that's all the damage. I'm assuming the aft case needs to come off to replace the bearing. I don't have much time with deer hunting and work so it can wait till x-mas.

Worst part is I'm a aircraft mech of 30 years, really stings a bit.
