I am a true newbie here so any input is appreciated!

I am looking at an 01 Honda Rancer ES 4x4. It has 1300 hrs/7600 miles.

How is the mileage/hrs in your opinion. It looks real nice and clean.

I am good at mechanics on my KLR Motorcycle and I have an 84 Suzuki LT.

I need some input on what to look for on an 01 rancher and opinions on the hrs/mileage.

Thanks and look forward to postin!

On the other end of the spectrum I have an 04 Rincon with almost 8000 miles and it still runs like a champ. It's all in how it is cared for and maintained. Ask for service records, check fluid levels( oil, both diffs, etc.) check cv boots. I'm sure someone else will be along to give more tips.

Welcome to the forums. That is quite a few miles, but I just rebuilt an '02 Rancher 350ES 4X4 that had 18,000 miles on it. It runs like new again.

Thanks for all the quick responses!

I am leary as well about the mileage. Seller is asking $2500

Helmut.....how did that '02 you rebuilt run before the rebuild or did you aquire it and then rebuild?

Are there any honda's to stay away from in general?

It belonged to one of my friends. It ran great, but the oil temp sensor quit working, causing the fan not to kick on and it melted the piston and rings. That seems to be a common problem with the 350 Ranchers, I've seen a lot of them do that. Other than that, they run great. That's really about the only thing I see go wrong with the engines on them, other than the occasional one that starts smoking and using oil, but that's usually due to neglect/abuse.

personally..if it were me..i'd stay away from elec shift models..but..this is me..manaul shift is alot better in my book..there is just to much to go wrong with a elec shift..buttttttt..some ppl have had no problems with them. although..i sure have seen alottttttttt of ppl come on here telling us thier elec shift stopped working.

I really appreciate all the feedback. I was concerned about the ES as well. There is something about not manually shifting that is wrong anyway!

I will keep shopping for a good used ATV. Thanks again!
