Well gidday from the Ottawa valley. After lurking around while googling for some problems I was having with my quad I decided to join so I can ask some questions.
A few years back I saw an add for an 86 350 Fourtrax. After doing some research I figured out that these quads were very highly rated so I went for it. The bike had no spark but was in quite good shape and for $850 I thought it was still a good deal. Knowing nothing about them I brought the quad in to a small engine shop to repair and go over the whole machine for me. Turns out the sprag bearing had exploded and taken out the armature windings.
I recently had to replace the muffler with an after market model which was a bit of a chore as in wasn't quite the same and the exhaust pipe had gone out of round under the old clamp, but after some filing and muffler cement it's all good now. Nice to have a quieter machine without the back firing problems too.
Anyways, I'm having some intermittent problems with the oil temp light but I'm not overly concerned but still want to get it fixed. I have found a used sensor and fan control unit that I will probably grab up regardless.
My more serious problem is a loud slapping noise coming from the engine when it is cool. Once I take it for a good run the noise is gone but I'm starting to think that it is the cam chain tensioner or possibly a stretched chain. Regardless, I definitely need to look into this before it jumps a tooth and causes more serious issues to deal with, which is why I joined the forums today. Once I pose my questions I'm sure I'll be able to get some great advice from the knowledgeable folks here.
