420 died on me the other night out in the field. Tried to start it and found it had a dead battery. I jumped it off and it didn't have enough juice to go into gear. I wish I had not asked the wife if she wanted electronic shift. Got the emergency lever on it and could not get it into 1st but was able to get into reverse. Rode it to the house backwards while holding a flashlight. I bet it would have won America's Funniest Home Videos. Next time I jump it off, I'll put it in gear before letting the jumper take his cables and ride off. I put it on the battery tender on and checked it the next day. Only got 12.7v so I'm sure the battery is damaged. Started it up and checked again. 12.3v....uh-oh. Engine was running rough too. Normally I love to hear the words "no charge", but not in this case.
My weekend plans have drastically changed and will now consist of checking to see if the rectifier or stator is bad in addition to the battery. I've got 20 hours on it so I will do a valve clearance check while I'm at it. Any chance I can get a rectifier/stator/battery warrantied if I do the work myself? I don't particularly want to haul the thing 60 miles and have to drive back down a week later to pick it up over something I can do myself. I'd enjoy making a trip on my bike (two wheel variety) to pick up parts, but it's no fun to drive down there twice in a cage.
