Free 300 given to me!!

I was given this 1989 300 2wd a few days ago. It runs great, and all axles/bearings are good. Paint is in great shape, but plastic has a few issues. Seat has a couple holes, but I’ve already ordered a cover. Master cylinder is shot, and I’ve ordered that also. Muffler has a few pinholes, and that may be my biggest concern. I read somewhere about a tractor muffler that can be modded to work fairly easily, but can’t find it. Any advice on this? I’ve got a mig welder and I’m fairly competent with it, so I can weld brackets for the muffler. Any advice on other things to look for/at on this machine would be appreciated.

mhhmmm my favorite 4 letter word FREE :)

I know exhausts are hard to weld because the metal is so thin. I tried to weld my exhaust header, turned my mig welder all the way down and it still melted the metal like butter. I also went to school for 2 years of welding. I bet someone else has a good idea of what you could do. Could score :)

I know the factory muffler Would be almost impossible to weld, it’s got pinholes already, so the metal is very thin. May be able to braze it, but that would be a temporary fix.

That would be an ok temporary fix, but I imagine that it is going to fall off pretty fast from all of the vibrations and bumps. May not be worth your time. My .02

Found the tractor muffler I was looking for, the FO-14. I’ve also got a Big Gun muffler from a KLR650 I had. It could probably be adapted, but it’s LOUD!! That’s the reason I took it off the KLR.

Nothing is impossible :)

Why don’t you roll a nice piece of 1.2mm sheet and sleeve the whole muffler? The end caps on the muffler are probably solid to weld to, there pressed to shape and are a thicker material than the muffler.

if it helps you any , I just changed the muffler yesterday on my 92 300 4x4 , I used a pipe and muffler from what I think is a 88 300 2wd , not 100% sure as I have had about every year 300 along the way , I don't mark my parts like I should ,waiting for someone who will recognize the year on my thread , but anyways , it had different bends coming out the head , but went right on and all the mounting holes lined up , so I would guess you could use any muffler /pipe off any 88-at least to 92 , 2wd or 4wd , even though it doesn't look the same

Yeah I need to find some of those little tags with wire ties like Powersportsnation uses so I can tag my parts. Mine are like a big puzzle now.

I've looked online, but haven't found any.
