Well its almost gotta be something in the reverse light switch circuit to only die in reverse.
Not sure but I would guess a circuit in the cdi box burnt out

I think I’m right with what im about to say, Electrics aren’t my strong point. I’ll be corrected if I’m wrong I’m sure.

If you remove the Reverse wire from the sensor and ground it to the frame it will bypass the sensor, that would eliminate the possibility of a bad bad sensor.

I’ve been lucky so far with electrical issues on ATV’s so my knowledge is pretty much limited on the subject however, the above method works for Neutral/starting in gear somim basing it on the same theory.

Not sure on year. I just bought it from a friend. It didnt run so I put a new cdi box on it and now it runs but dies in reverse. reverse light also stays on all the time even when driving forward. friend said when it was running for him it never did that and reverse worked.

Ahh. You missed that all important bit of information, new cdi..! Where was the CdI from, eBay? If yes then that is your issue.
Buy only OEM or from Ricks Motorsport Electrics (.com)

You can figure out the year by the 10th digit in the VIN
There's a chart on here somewhere that tells what year it is by that, can't tell ya where on the board but I found it recently so can't be buried to far

300's had some changes over the years so kinda need to know what year it is when buying parts

We seem to see at least 5 or 6 new threads by new members each week, all having this same issue:

The owner thought he/she was saving $$$ when they bought cheap chinese knockoff parts for their ATV.

Say it ain't so this time..?
