Hello! First post here. I just bought an old '86 200sx for my son and was worried about having to work on it all the time. It's working great, but he rides with his cousin and his '86 FourTrax 125 is in sorry shape so that's the one I'm stuck working on all the time.

The engine runs great cold but stalls when hot and won't restart. When it does start there is some black smoke from the exhaust and it won't idle. Took the air box off when acting up and the choke plate was closed. I held the plate open with a screwdriver and it ran great. The cable and lever seem to work fine, but the choke is spring operated with no actual mechanical connection with the lever. The spring tension is greater when the choke lever is pulled. Why is the choke plate held closed when the choke is off and what do I need to do to repair it? Sorry, I'm new to these things and help would be greatly appreciated.

the choke plate has a return spring on the other side of the carb.it may be broken ..or came unhooked....you will have to remove the metal spring cover that is crimped over the return spring..and see what kind of shape it's in..it's probally broken..off came off.

Thanks for the reply. Both springs are in good shape and on the same side of the carb. One is on the inside of the black plastic choke lever to pull the LEVER to the off position. The smaller one is on the outside of the same lever, but it pulls the CHOKE PLATE to the closed position. There is no spring that pulls the plate open on this carb. It looks like there must be something gone from the black plastic choke lever that physically holds the plate open when the lever is in the off position but I can't find a picture of it anywhere. I'm going to head in to the Honda dealer later.

someone may have wound the return spring the wrong way on the choke lever..i've seen this done..remove the return spring..and turn it around..you can watch how the cable pulls the choke lever up, which in turn..moves the choke lever..which lets the choke plate go to the close position..when you push the choke cable to the off position..the return spring forces the choke plate to the open position..this is if..the return spring is wound the right way around the carb's choke area ?..good luck.

Got it fixed. The small spring actually holds the plate closed, but there is a small tab broken off the plastic choke lever that is supposed to catch on the choke shaft and pull it open when the choke is released. I guess this is to avoid damage if the cable is adjusted too tight. When the plate goes closed and there is more travel in the cable, the spring takes over instead of mechanical bind. Odd setup. Bad thing is that there are no carb parts available separately at the dealer.

Anyway, I drilled a small hole in the plastic lever where the tab was supposed to be and pressed in a 3/32" roll pin. It pulls the plate open when the choke is released. Works good.

Thanks for the suggestions.
