Hello all,

I have a 90 Honda Fourtrax 300 FW that i was given, it needs tlc. The steering shaft bearing is toast. I have removed the steering shaft, and circlip but the outer bearing race is stuck. The manual says to remove it from the top, not much room or a straight shot at it due to the front diff. Any tips on removing it? The only thing i can think of is making a relief cut with a dremel then trying to pound it out with a punch. Or trying to press it out with a ball joint press?

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Those are difficult to drive out from the bottom with the diff still in it. Got a 3 ft length of all-thread rod you can use for a crude slide hammer?? Stack a couple large washers then a nut under the bearing, slide something heavy (a pipe coupler works) over the top end of the rod, stack washers then a nut and slide hammer the old bearing out.

@fish files I did remove the snap ring. I was able to remove the outer bearing race with an air chisel. I ground down a pointed bit flat and used it switching from side to side working the race out. Worked really well, a few marks left by the chisel slipping but it will clean up with some sand paper.

Thanks.

A Dremel with a sanding drum is a good tool to clean the bearing bores with , the new style heavy duty drum sander paper and grinding wheels by Dremel that say they last longer are not lying , they really do last longer

once the race is all that is in there ?, it's a pounding job from there on out. has to be hammered out from the bottom up, ya can't go down, as there is a stopping ring down in the hole, part of the frame. retro gives good advice ^^..IF THE WHOLE BEARING IS THERE ?..if only the race is left down in there ?, its a beating game like you did. i've done many of them. it's best to service these bearings when the front differential is already out of the frame. makes it a lot easier to reach from underneath to hammer up, but not everyone wants to remove the front diff in order to do this job ?!..lol.

done many of them the way you did it. make sure to re-pack the new bearing with plenty of grease before you hammer it down in the hole !. don't forget the lower and upper dust seals !.
