Hello,

Newbie here so any help would be great.

So I was driving my buddies 1992 Honda Fortrax 300 through some snow, and it got deeper so I had to go slower but was in third gear. I lifted off the throttle and attempted to shift down to second and it wouldn’t go. I tried to hit the gas to go and then I guess the best sound to describe it is that there was a small clunk (small is subjective, but I know more info is better than less). So at this point in time, I was stopped and attempted to shift down into first to get going again and now I can’t go down the gears. I ended up pushing it back into my shed where my buddy was able to “giggle” the shifter and get it back into neutral to start it up again. Our thought was that it just may need an adjustment or tranny fluid so we just left it. I went to move it out of the shed and was able to start it up (motor works like a top) put it in reverse, yes the reverse light came on, hit the throttle and it didn’t move. It didn’t even almost move and even thought the reverse light was on, it seemed like it was still in Neutral. We are able to turn the wheeler on and go up/down the gears and there is resistance when we push the wheeler a few feet forward or backward, so it would seem like it is in gear, but we are lost.

Any help or direction would be much appreciated.

Look around the wheels and breaks, could be some snow blocking it. If there is, I would get a hair dryer or warm water on it. Also be sure breaks aren't locked in position. These sort of things could happen with snow so just spitballing

Try adjusting the clutch and

check to make sure your shifter lever is bolted tight and not slipping on the splines

If still won’t shift, then possibly if this thing has a shifter return spring (internal) broke

Link to manual and Parts listing in my sig block

Ok, we went and tried a few things and here is some more info...We cannot go above 1st gear. Every time we shifted down the column, into neutral or reverse, it grinds. Going up the gears from reverse to neutral or nutual into 1st there is no grind. We decreased the play and the clutch and the grind going down the gear column is reduced but still there. the 4 Wheeler lurches when put into 1st from neutral or reverse from neutral but still there is a grinding sound when going down the shifting column. After we are in gear (after the lurch) we hit the gas and NOTHING. Any new thoughts?

Sounds to me like shift arm with the bearing plate on it.... I say that because if thats off, or not right, you will for sure have issues shifting. I can't remember what it's called off the top of my head. But someone will surely chime in!!!!!

I haven't had a chance yet to drive it again (been up to lake of the woods fishing). But it sounds like the clutch adjustment was all it took. We tried to adjust it in my shop, but apparently we don't know what we're doing (because we don't). The guy said he could tell we were messing with it and then he made an adjustment and said it works. So we'll see.
