Hey guys, getting ready to put a starter clutch in an 02 foreman. The last one I done I already had the engine out for a timing chain so it was easy. But this one has no other issues than the starter clutch....I APPEARS I can put it on the lift and pull the swingarm off and do the work inside the frame. Anyone have experience with this??

What are you calling a starter clutch ? Maybe you are thinking the shift clutch ?

If you pull the swing arm off you can get the back cover off the motor with it still in the frame. Removing the airbox also helps free up space to work.

The starter clutch is the one way bearing located on the back of the flywheel. It allows the start to start the motor one direction but not spin the starter while the motor is running. It serves the same purpose as a bendix.....thanks rocket man. I tore the swingarm off of it today and seen it looked very promising. I'll continue on tomorrow

If you google part number 28126-HN0-A01 Honda calls it a "one way clutch"......In this case our 2 wrongs made a right :rating10::rating10::icon_ peace::icon_ peace::funnykawie::funnykawie: hahahaha

Starter clutch reminds me when I made a big mistake in my life and bought a Polaris 500 Sportsman , there was a starter Bendix which was separate of the starter , kind of like a starter clutch , it blew up , blew a hole in the case , took out the recoil start , destroyed the stator , starter and made a mess

Personally I'd take the motor out and do the job in question on the work bench. A lot more work but a lot less stress

I ended up pulling the swingarm and pulling it all out through the back. Putting it up on the lift and sticking my head between the frame rails made it nice. Im running a shop on the side. To me, the time I can save is money. The last few foreman motors ive pulled have come out easy but I had no way around the job other than pulling them. The less bolts I can avoid taking out, the better. We all know 1 broken exhaust stud (or any broken bolt for that matter) can turn a half day job into a 2 day job lol

I have replaced a lot of one-way starter clutch bearings in projects with the motor still in the frame. some models have to have the swing arm dropped, while others you can do all this with the swing arm still in the frame. main thing is getting the back end high enough, so you wont have to drain the engine oil.
