I personally like the ES. I've heard from some people that they have problems with ES but I haven't had any on either one of my bikes. The ES is easier to shift IMO, plus easier to shift gears when you're waist deep in a mud hole . In the long run the foot shift would probably be more reliable but i'm not a fan of foot shift. Mostly depends on what you plan to do with it.

I personally have had great experiences with both, knock on wood. However, if/when I purchase a new unit it will likely be foot shift. The major issue I have with ES is when the battery does go down or if the ES is not working you can be hosed (I know there is a simple tool in the tool box so you can get into 1st and crawl out) and that can be a problem where I hunt way back in the woods and I want to eliminate possible reliability issues. I will have the pull start added to my next unit as well.

do a search on any Honda atv site and see all the issue's with posts/tread with E shift and then do same search about issue's with foot shifts
the difference in posts/treads is amazing, for issue';s with ES models, and far and few with foot shift 's
that sort of says a lot to me
when ES works its great, those that have it say!
but sadly, based on treads, there are far more time when it seems it has issue's

we have e shift on our 2011 recon, works fine no issues, that being said its never mudded or rode hard (unless im riding), i have a buddy who has a rancher footshift and it has no problems and he rides the ***t out of it, so personally id prefer a foot shift but with 215 hrs and roughly 900 miles the green one sure is nice

I wouldnt buy an ATV with a plow already on it :O
have to ask WHY NOT!
My atv has been plowing snow now for almost 20 yrs
I admit I have abused atv with plow, but I also do a LOT of extra PM's and keep things as best I can to see it lasts a long time
some owners DO care about things lasting, a plow wouldn';t scare me away as much as , seeing a snorkel or BIG mud tires would
I don't very many folks that SANK an atv in snow and got water in there motors doing so, they tend to just get stuck LOL

NOW I have known a few guys that broke thru ice and sank one, but thats WAY lower odds than some one sinking there atv in a summer time mud hole these days!, which is actually rather common
so can you say why you wouldn;'t buy an atv with a plow on it??
I'd be courious to know why, if you care to share(not bashing, just asking)

again thanks to everyone for the advice, id like to look at the foot shift first the obvious reason being its a footshift, the green one has low miles\hours but it has that e shift, as for tires that's not a huge issue i can buy a set of cheapies till i can afford good ones, the plow will be nice being as it snows a lot here and its not convenient to put the bucket on the tractor :p, it looks to be all original so i doubt its been sunk (fingers crossed), i personally prefer to do mods myself so i know they're done right, we'll have to see which ones there once i sell my sportsman (yes i own a polaris)

My friends who have had them, had electrical issues where you (usually) are plowing your snowy yard at night & you have lights on, heated grips etc. & the constant up & down of the winch takes a toll on the battery & charging system. Some guys have added a car battery to the machine as well as the ATV one. Motor doesnt rev high nor long enough to charge it.
Then there is the slamming into a snow bank & 'possibly' tweaking the frame. Front end getting out of alignment or twisted with the added force with the 4x4 pushing the weight of the snow. Not saying all are like this, but unless you really knew the owner that they didnt abuse it, theres a good chance some yahoo is PO'd he has to plow the white crap & wants to get it over with. Just my 2c ...better passing on one than buying IMO.

well I can see your point, but honestly
almost 20 yrs of plowing snow, dirt gravel and all sorts of things, never ever had a issue with battery not holding up, and battery never on a tender(tll last yr and not always there still LOL)
I am sure it COULD run a weaker battery down, and if you a guy that has a zillion electronics's on board and all ON, , but just plowing and up and down of winch, I don;'t see killing an atv's battery or charging system, as the line is only moving a few inches at a time, so its very short burst of power
and most Smarter folks SHOULD be using a battery tender when atv is done in winter time period, plow or not machine, COLD temps drain battery's, averaged 5+ yrs out of battery's
and again, for 15+ yrs mine lived pretty much exposed to all elements and I plowed a few hundred miles every winter.

also, plows have trip springs on them to SAVE atv from damage, if you hit things under the snow, and the pins on them will break and shear before the ATV's frame will
IF your running into a plow back hard enough to BEND a frame, your alsos getting throw over the handle bars, so again doubt many are doing this more than a few times before they find its not fun! HAHA!

so I wouldn;t worry about that to be honest
I once hit a curb at about 25+ mph, sheared the pin's plow tripped and atv stopped REALLY fast
NO damage at all, I don't see that being a normal deal and once you do it I think most would learn to smarten up(as I did ) handle bars hit thigh's real hard and make you say some foul language reran fast! LOL
but I have also plowed a an easy 200+ ton of gravel, and again NO damage to atv';s frame at all

Plows do not scare me on ATV
s
all the more so since most I know that have them tend to have SMALL drive ways they use them on, most folks that plow bigger things USE bigger things
I'm maybe a odd ball here, as I plow MILES at a time, plowing trails thru the woods behind my place and drive way it was mainly used on was over a 1/2 mile long, and I plow that 16-20+ ft wide every snow fall, and then about the main field(again for walking trails) and all the building's
it was an easy 120+ miles of plowing every time it snowed for 15 + yrs, from snow falls of a few inches to 30+ inches(that works an atv more than hitting things IMO, and MOST folks won't use an atv here again just too time consuming( I like plowing with the atv and didn't mind spending hours to move DEEP snow, had the time to kill)
so worries about atv's with plow's I still say is a lower odds deal than many other n=mods being on one!

I’ve seen push tubes and frames tweaked because of riders ramming drifts.
If this is a concern, look at the rear fender alignment (one higher than the other, cracks in plastics near the attachment points), creases in frame near the push tube mounts, and bent/twisted tubes.
It’s more likely (low miles for the year) that the owner simply didn’t enjoy it as much as he planned.

ES for me as it is easier to shift with big boots on and in the mud. As for plowing, my 2000 has plowed most winters and is in great shape. (now watch I just jinxed myself!!!!)
