This past weekend my Oil Change light came on, and after looking at the manual it seems it is time for my first service. I had to go about 30 km over the 150 km service mark as I was far from my cottage so hopefully I didnt do any damage. Anywho, I got a quote for the first service and it was $225.00 Canadian. I referred to the manual and it seems all they do is change the oil and filter and inspect the nuts and bolts etc. My question is, is the service really nessecary? I tallied the cost for the oil, filter, and washer which came out to about $50.00. Should I just do this myself instead of spending the extra $175.00 for someone to look at my machine? Any help is appreciated.

BTW, I read the threads about being careful with the oil drain bolt as it strips easily.

Any help is appreciated--- Thanks!

cheaper and easier to do yourself..no sinse in spending the extra money in doing something you can do yourself..save the money..do it yourself...it's not hard at all to change the oil and oil filter.

At the 150 Km mark they also look at the values and make sure the clearance is fine. If that is not done you can lose your warranty, that is what my dealer said. So I did my own oil and paid 150 total for the value check. It does say to check this in the schedule in the manual, I missed it the first time looking through.

they will tell you anything...to make a buck off of you...all they will do..if at all..because your not standing there watching them...too see if they do it..is change the oil..oil filter..and maybe..just maybe..they might check the air in the tries..air filter..brake fluid..other than that..they won't check anything..unless they are going to get some cash out of you. checking the valve clearance..and so forth..is a simple thing to check yourself..don't waste your time and money..letting the dealer rip you off.

Big thing is the warranty that came with it. Last year I bought a new Can AM and had the 10 hour service check come up. I am quite handy with a wrench and thought of doing it myself... till I found out CAN AM would not honor the warranty if the 10 hr check was done by someone who was not certified. $400 later I had the fluids changed, valves adjusted, and a new coded key made. Rip off ?? You damn right! Anything I could do about it?? No.

Thanks for the advice guys. I will probably change the oil myself this weekend so I can ride next weekend. Hopefully I dont mess anything up.
nah..you shouldn't have any trouble...just changing the oil ...lol..all you need is a good set of sockets..a oil drain pan..some honda oil for wet clutches...and a oil filter...and about 15 min's of spare time..and you should be back on the trail in no time...just don't over tighten the oil drain plug...good and snug..thats all you need...same thing goes on your oil filter cover. most important..DO NOT PUT THE OIL FILTER IN BACKWARDS !.
