well, it was a good day and a bad day. i was a decent size doe, shot 5 times at about 70 yards and missed. i only got a 30.30 so it was reaching its limit. i also had a case of the buck fever. oh well, atleast i know they are there. my buddy also missed a decent one. my dad however had an encounter with a moose, she walked with in 15 feet of him.

70 yards the limit on a 30-30? Nah. It will shoot fairly flat out to 150 yards, and you can use it to 250 if you sight it at 200. Sight it at 200 then at 150 it will be 3 inches high and at 250 it will be 3 inches low.

You can also buy 125gr bullets to flatten it out more, if you like. I thought about that, but if I ever needed to shoot that far I'd just use a 30-06.

I've hunted a 30-30 every year for over 30 years. They are great guns.

ADDED: Are you certain you missed it? Was it running or standing still? What happened when you shot, did it jump or just look at you? You might have winged it and should track it.

yeah, i mean i could get more distance out of it. i have never seen 125 gr. i use 150. but usually i hunt in alot of brush like cuttings, and thick woods( i use the silver tiped shells). my gun is only sighted in at 50 yards because thats usually the max i need. i was calling her in with the can call, which works well. i got nervous and messed up. i should of let her walk in some more.

i did try to track her, she didnt jump at all. i knew i didnt hit her, i was where i hit the trees. ive shot enough deer, i know when i hit one. no blood, no hair, nothing. i searched for about ans hour with no signs. she was walking, then i shot, then she took off in an all out bolt with no limping, jumping or staggering. what it came down to was that a got nervous and my gun is not sighted in 70 to 100 yards.

Don't use the 125gr bullets for brush. 150 to 170 is what you need, and no, a 70 yard shot isn't beyond that guns range.

Can calls are for bucks though, not does. ;)

Better luck next time. When I was a kid I had a 30.30. I kept it sighted dead on at 100 yards.Worked out pretty good. Just shoot it at 50 to see how it's shooting. It should be about 3" high at 50 yards.

Must be nice to start slinging the lead at deer . We have to wait to the week of Thanksgiving here in Wv.The rut is just starting here now.Glad the boy has tagged out with the bow,(on bucks) now I can sling the arrows.:icon_ goofy:

I have the same gun...5-6 years ago I rolled a doe on a full run across a corn field at 200 yards...with one shot. That was through a scope though.:D

A .30-.30 can get there, but I wouldn't want to rely on it...there are much better guns for that kind of shot.

oh, i know she'll reach but when its cold out and nervous like i was, its not hard to mess up.
im telling you, i swear by the can call. in the morning, it called in that doe and later that night, it called in another deer, but i had no chance too shoot, it was bleating and stomping at me, but i couldnt see it.
i usually only hunt in heavy brush but for some reason, the deer are in the big cuttings. i have a whole month to go to tag out. ive seen alot of sign of big bucks on the ground, the ruts on the ground, etc. im telling you guys, use the primos original can early morning or later at night. it will pay off.
