Do you suspect that this is from the owner attempting to turn the ATV that this engine was removed from into a Navy gunboat? In other words, had it been sunk? Or was it simply that the oil had never been changed? I'd suspect that he was a Navy man . . .

The only way that oil gets like that is NOT BEING CHANGED OR COOKED TO DEATH IN A GARAGE FIRE!! My guess it would be a person that is full blown Idiot that neglects his stuff!!

another thing is, some idiot might have used USED oil to refill it, during an oil change
but that thing sure looks like it seen a LOT of heat to get it that black!

lots of moron's out there that own motors and know ZIP about them or what it takes to make one last!

This sort of problem has been with us for many decades. It is caused by paraffin reacting (congealing by chemical reactions) to normal heating/cooling cycles that every motor endures. Pennsylvania crude based oils commonly have paraffin in them, so if you avoid those brands that are made from Penn crude stocks, you generally avoid the problem.

BTW, your photo is not an uncommon sight and the congealed paraffin (by itself) was probably not a major contributing factor to its eventual demise. It looks really scary though... and most young people don't know what it is... which is probably the reason why it was chosen for marketing purposes.

I would also bet that oil was never changed !..lol. and yes, YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU WILL FIND INSIDE A MOTOR WHEN YOU SPLIT IT ?!. I could write a book on odd stuff I found inside motors that I've split !..lol.
