Just bought a 2008 Rancher TRX420FE with electric shift. Tt has a little trouble shifting gears unless you really mash on the button. Pretty sure it just needs a replacement shift switch assembly.

I was just curious if anyone had some insight on this. How much of a pain is the install, and does any calibration/etc need done after doing that, or is it good to go at that point?

Welcome to the forum! when you buy new switch buttons it comes with a pigtail so you just unplug your old and plug the new one in and good to go.
If you consider your old one trash tho feel free to dissect it and see if it's repairable with some cleaning.
But do check your original switch button plug. clean it and put dialetric grease. Same at the angle sensor plug and shift motor plug and see if it improves before replacing switch button setup. Assuming you are not getting a code flashing on your dash when the button doesn't work.

All good info, I appreciate it. No codes flashing, that's me hoping it's an easy fix.
Will look into greasing the connections.
Where are the angle sensor and shift motor plugs? (I'm just getting familiar with this thing, so currently pretty uneducated in the ATV and small engine world)

Angle sensor is on the back of the motor and control shift motor is on the front of the motor. There are also directions in the pic on how to remove the shift motor and check the little shift gears. The gears and bearings have a really sticky grease on them and you can clean that off with brake cleaner and replace with regular grease to improve shifting. It may help.
Here's a copy of a repair manual if you'd like to do some electrical testing on the buttons.
