I was wondering: what are the main differences between the 250EX and the Recon? The engines are the same. Obviously, the Recon is a utility model vs the EX, which is a sport quad. Are the Recons geared any differently? They have a manual clutch, right? vs. the automatic clutch on the EX. The Recon is a bit slower?

I've been considering getting a Recon to go along with our 250EX's. It'd be nice to have a quad with racks on it for gear, etc when we ride. A guy has one on craigslist for $1700. Nice shape, according to the ad...

They are practically the same machine. The gearing on the Recon is going to be a bit more towards torque(I would imagine) where the 250EX will be geared more for sport use.

We need racks for gear, etc. We miss that on the EX's. Other than that, they're great machines.
Any way that cargo racks could be bolted to them?

Plastics are the only thing different. until 2007 when the 250EX was given the option of the manual/sport clutch. Before that they shifted the same way. Also the Recon had the nice pull start option, whic I think can be incorporated on the EXs. The frames are the same so Racks shouldn't be an issue just drilling out the plastics will be a hard decision to make..lol would for me.

Yeah, you can probably get a rack for the rear of the 250EX, because I know you can get one for the rear of the 300EX. Like Moose said, you'll probably have to drill holes in your fenders to accept the racks.

The Recons have front drum brakes, instead of disk on the EX. They both are manual shift with auto clutch, but the newer Ex's use a "sport" clutch, which acts as a manual clutch, but the quad will not stall out if you don't give it gas. The EX also has more suspension travel, but the recon has a short turning radius, and turns better than anything I've ever riden. The newer recons are also about 60lbs heavier.
