So had some spare time today and decided to play around with the spare engine transmission seeing as tho I am a little queasy about it. The case has been split for a few days and when I pulled it apart a few washers came off and one of the shafts pulled out. So I figured I would print a couple pages from the service manual and give it a go. I went step by step for removal as the gears were still in the correct order. Easy part completed. Now reverse everything, first I had a heck of a time holding both the counter and main shafts to place in the cover. I have small hands but just couldn't make it work so put in the counter shaft loosely and leaned it over a tad with enough room to put the main shaft in. Once in the gears all meshed and turned together which was good news. The final gear shaft went in pretty easy. I had the hardest time trying to get the 3 shift forks in the right spots and the tabs in the shift drum. Finally got them and pushed the fork shaft down thru the holes. The last couple gears were pretty easy and again was able to spin all the gears and shafts.

The only thing I'm not sure of was aligning all the oil holes on the shafts and bearings. I will prolly do this again and see if I can figure out what they are describing, guess I didn't pay attention the first time. Obviously this is pretty important.

So have some practice behind me when I take my bottom core apart to replace my crankshaft and whatever else. I am fortunate to have the spare engine for making mistakes......it's just amazing what you guys are helping me do that I never imagined trying!!

those bushings that have a hole in them ?, if you noticed, they line up with the hole in the shafts IF THEY ARE SPLINED RIGHT ?!, what I mean is, some with holes line up to the holes on the shaft, some do not because the grooves are not placed in the correct spot. if in doubt ?, always make sure the holes line up ( oil galley holes ) ?, if the bushing wont drop down on the correct hole ?, then this is not how it goes. most do though. sooo..to cover your butt..MAKE SURE YOU TEST FIT THE BUSHING TO SEE IF IT SLIDES DOWN, AND SPLINES LINE UP !. otherwise, your gears will not get oil where it should !.

also, with the shift forks ?, the way I do it, is I make sure the bottom shift fork has the letter R facing up goes in first, the middle shift fork with the letter C, then the top fork should have the letter F installed. all shift forks must have their letter facing up when you install them !. R=rear, C=center, F=front, this is how I break it down, and install the shift forks.

and dont forget to install the final drive shaft gear !. if you stack the tranny all in ?, then you must pull some top gears off in order to install the final gear drive shaft !..lol.

I will just say thanks for the replies and advise. I plan on taking things apart again and will check the bushings for oil holes. The SM was very clear about the shift forks with letters facing up. I did install the final gear as the SM said. Things should work a little smoother the second time...hopefully....

Hi there, I was hoping you can help me out a bit.
I have seen a few threads and opinions on installing the tranny gears. do you have any pics or videos on the install?
