How do I check if my crank is bad? Checked before split there was no play spun freely. No side to side or up and down just rod moved none from crank. Tore down for shifter shaft and had shavings in the oil.. down to crank n case now.

I use a dial indicator on a mag base. Locked crank at top dead center. Indicated off of the tip of the rod. Not very precise because everything is moving around. Found .0 play in rod bearing.
