I am not techy so forgive the ignorance.

I have one that has low compression 85 PSI. (TRX400) I have talked to some people and repair guys and found that I really need to rebuild the thing. There are a few things I guess I could try before being that drastic but my question is this: What effect will low compression really have both short and long term. It seems to run ok. When I am tackling hill climbs during a race is the bottom end just gonna go and leave me on the side of that hill or what? Just dont want to throw good money after bad.

It really depends on how bad your rings are. If they are wore really bad it is possible for one to break and cause a lot of trouble. It is always cheaper to repair it before it gets worse. but you could ride it like that for a while and (maybe) be ok. But I would not risk it.

Agree^^^ and it's really not difficult to tear the top off and do it either you probably can get a topend kit for under 300 bucks and if you do rebuild you can get larger piston kits for the same price.

I agree with Sub and Moose. I would just go ahead and rebuild the top end and forget about it.

Agreed with all the above, will be less costly now than when it does tear up
