This might be a stupid question, but since this is the first one I've owned I'll ask anyway. How often should you change the oil, and what brand(s) do you suggest? Oh, mine is a '97 300ex. Thanks. Marc

The maintenance schedule for the 300EX says to change the oil and filter every 600 miles or every 100 hours. The recommended oil is Honda GN4 10W-40.

When i first got my quad, i figured the oil hadn't been changed in a while so i decided to do it...
Good thing, there was probly less than a quart in it, and it was super black.
I bought the honda GN4 10w40 and used that, with a little seafoam.
I've changed the oil 3 times since i bought it in april (i know... a bit of overkill)
but now my oil looks like it just came out of the bottle.
Seafoam works pretty nice, i use it in my car (gas and oil) and my quad.
I would recommend it.
I dont think ill be doing an oil change for a while now tho, after learning the actualy change intervals haha

Helmut is right but if you find yourself looking for oil at a auto parts store you want oil that is designed for a wet clutch. Not just regular motor oil. I change my oil at least 1 time per season. With my old 300ex I could actually feel when the oil needed to be changed. Sound stupid I know but its true.

The guy I bought from said he always used yamalube. Is that good oil, or would you stick with the Honda stuff?
Yamalube is designed for wet clutches, so it should work just as good as Honda GN4. If the truth was known, it's probably the same oil anyway.

oil change

I go to Advanced Auto, and they have a motorcycle section with atv wet clutch oil 10W 40, and they have a Fram oil filter also, that fits 250X/300EX quads. I've had no problems with their brand oil or Fram oil filter. I change my oil after roughly every two to three beatings due to 30-50 mile riding. We're talking beating the snot out of your quad. Maybe to much changing, but I feel better changing my oil that way. If anybody knows why alot of people puts down Fram filters, please let me know why. I've used Fram for years on all my vehicles, with no issues.
