99trx300fw. Well alot of ya'll know im still in the process of rebuiliding my 300. Put the gas tank back on and turned on the fuel, primed the carb and she fires right up. Well, next i smell gas. So i start looking around and there is gas leaking out of the hose at the back of my bike. There is a one way plastic valve i think and gas is coming out from the hose after it. This hose normally leaks gas when your bike is near vertical or turned over etc. But it hasnt ever leaked when the bike is on level ground. So i turned off the gas valve to keep it from leaking. If the gas valve is on, this hose is spitting gas. I checked the one-way valve to make sure it was ok, and sure enough you can blow through it one way, and not the other, which i believe is normal. Could there be something wrong inside the bottom of my carb? Im not really familiar with carbs, but i can learn, and remove it, and fix it, if i could figure out what might be wrong. Anybody encountered this before? Thanks, Tim.

Float valve is stuck open or debris caught between float needle and needle seat. Take the carb off and clean it good.

fixed it helmut! Thanks for the advice!

it didnt have much trash, but what little bit of red rusty paste was in there sure gummed it.
Seafoam aerosol did the trick with a paper towerl :)

well i got that fixed and it now runs like a top.

However, when i fix one thing i mess something else up.

Got my new handle bars on and was putting all my controls, brake levers etc back on the bars. The brake master cylinder "holder" #8.... this piece is fragile. Be careful to not overtighten, and be sure to put it on correctly with the up arrow at the top:angry:. Yea.. its like aluminum or pot metal. Can't believe i broke that thing with a 1/4 inch drive 8mm socket... Part ordered 28.79 shipped to the door.... Man sometimes i wish i had a 3rd leg to kick me right in the ass.

welp. Had another productive day working on my bike. Got motor oil and filter changed, didnt break anything:yeahbaby01:!!

Yesterday my float valve was stuck open. Took the bottom of the carb off and cleaned it good and reassembled. Well, i added a touch of sea foam to the gas and filled the tank up with some new 87. Let it idle for a about an hour or so to charge the battery. Sure enough, after piddling around for a while i come back and it's stuck open leaking gas again. I think im gonna run down to the hardware store and pick up one of those clear one-way lawn mower fuel filters. Maybe that would help keep the debris the screen can't catch out of my carb for good. Should i really take the top off clean everything in there too? Guess while im at it i'll take my k&n pre filter clean it, and then wash out my actual air filter. Should this solve my problems?

On a side not, i did decide to go ahead and pull my slightly bent stearing stem out and replace with a straight one. For twenty bucks, why not. My reasoning is, i've been working on this thing for almost a month now, and by gosh, when i get done, it'll be a turd that just wont flush if im cruising with my handlebars cockeyed because i didnt bother to replace the stem... Heck why not i guess.

Whats ya'lls thoughts on the carb? Thanks again helmut & shade! Definitely need to meet up for a cold one some time.

If it's running good, other than the float sticking open, I wouldn't worry about cleaning the top of the carb. I would just clean the float needle and seat and the inline filter you mentioned would probably be a good idea.

understood helmut. i believe what happened is when the bike set up for 2 years, rust started to build and flake inside the tank.
