can you put a 400ex carb on a 300ex machine and if so are there any benefits and what needs to be done to make ot work correctly?

It would run worse than stock unless your 300ex had enough modifications to warrant the larger carb. I have no idea if it would bolt up; I'm just talking about the a/f delivery.

And even then, it might be hard to get it jetted just right. Just ask Moose.

Just get the jetting right. My 250x only has a cam, pipe, and K&N filter and has been jetted and has more than enough power for the riding I do. Unless you are really mechanically inclined, just getting the right gearing and a good set of tires will do all the wonders without all the hassle of switching carbs.
