I filled the tank up one morning, went out in the pasture to check on my animals. Was busy with them for around 20 minutes. Get back to the quad and there's gas all over the ground and the tank was nearly empty. That was this fall. I finally got around to taking the carb off yesterday and everything looked good. I gave it a good cleaning in an ultrasonic machine I use for my bullet casings. It wasn't that dirty inside. Could the needle and seat gone have gone bad from me not using this bike very much?

That’s exactly your issue, the rubber tip on the needle valve goes hard over time. Replace it and give the seat a clean and it should be good to go again.

I had my carb do the same thing.

All I did was unscrew the drain screw all the way, let the bowl drain, put the screw back, and I was good.

Sam's probably on the nose with this one, but you can try what I did to see if it works.

I didn't see a drain screw anywhere on the float bowl. Could I have seen it and not realized what it was? The drain that's leaking is open in it's design. There's no thread on it

I'm gonna just go ahead and order me a carb kit and be done with it. I thought I'd try cleaning it first but it seems the needle has become hardened to age. I gotta get this one back running as my '03 Foreman's front diff needs a rebuild so she's out of commission for a bit.

No. Only time i would change that is if its broken. If its still solid i would clean it real good and slap it back togeather!

And there is no specific rule for starting a new thread. Although it may get more views and more answers to make a new one in a specific section with a different title. Completely up to you though!

Thanks for the input and advice guys, I'm no novice by any stretch of the imagination but i don't have to work on my Honda's very much, thankfully. That's why I own 3 motorcycles presently, two quads that I bought brand new in '03 and a push mower. This forum is an invaluable resource and I appreciate it and you all, thanks.
BTW, I stumbled upon this site tonight, I'm sure you all know it but I needed to make sure. https://www.manualslib.com/ I found and d/led my manual in a few seconds, it's spot on as far as accuracy and detail. Cheers y'all!

Question..... kinda of the same issue, with gas coming out of the drain tube.
I filled the tank to the top and noticed gas coming out the tube. Is it possible to fill the tank too much?
Or, should I change the needle valve?

I am not surprised with a 14 year old unit with essentially 1 mile per week of use (14 years x 52 weeks is 728 weeks), so you can try exactly what is communicated above and you may have success. Likewise, you might get a new carb kit and work on it with success as well. Personally and if the unit is as you describe, I would buy a OEM Honda genuine carb and give it the love it deserves. While waiting on OEM carb, I would do the following: a) completely clean the tank and change fuel lines and b) change everything I mentioned in the welcome.

My brothers '02 Rancher was doing the same thing a couple weeks ago. I bought a Moose Racing brand carb kit off eBay. I think the kit was around $20. If you don't know anything about rebuilding a carb, there is a good YouTube video from Partzilla that shows step by step how to rebuild a Rancher carb. Its really east to do. Hardest part was getting some of the old screws broke loose.
