I have inherited my stepDad's '91 300 Fourtrax. It runs smooth as silk, EXCEPT, when I give it some gas, it has a slight hesitation under load. I can pull the choke knob for a second, and she runs right as rain.

I'm positive it's fuel related. I have cleaned the tank valve, float bowl at the tank valve, put a new inline filter, cleaned the tank of all old fuel, filled with fresh....etc.

The carb looks new, and I'm not sure if he had put a new one on before he passed away. I AM NOT, carb savvy.....

Thoughts?

Welcome to the forums.

From what you are explaining, it sounds to me like you need to strip the carb, pull all the jets out, clean them, blow everything out with air, and reassemble. IF it is only giving you slight hesitation on 1/4 throttle, thats telling me its your pilot jet giving you the issue. IF it's 1/4 - 3/4 throttle its the needle. Stock setting is 3rd clip down. WOT issues will be the main jet.

Once you wrap your head around how they work, they are quite simple really. Keep us posted as to whats going on!

Welcome Jimbo > From Southeast Louisiana --------- Since you said the carb looks brand new , first thing I would do is get the code off the side the carb , from that code I can tell you if that is the right carb for that year , I know a new carb from Honda for a 91 300 4x4 hasn't been available for a while now , makes me think you have a Chinese knock off , and if you do then I would stop now and regroup , instead of spending time trying to get a after market carb running right

With that said , from reading your post , it sounds like you never properly , deep cleaned the carb to start with

Jimbo , that is a very clean 91 red 300 ! The smooth mud flaps are so much better looking than the second gens , take care of them , you can't find them any more new

there are sticky threads on cleaning carbs , you need to really deep clean them sometimes , I totally disassemble and soak mine in a gallon of carb cleaner and blow them out with compressed air from a gun with a small rubber tip ----when you do clean the carb , it is a good idea to clean the tank and petcock and go with some fresh gas , preferably non-ethanal

I've looked for the carb number...I guess I'll need to pull the tank so I can see it.

It looks correct, but I can't swear to it. It has the idle screw on the lower right and the plunger on the left. I'm thinking it just looked new because it was relatively clean compared to the rest of the engine.

We hunt in Bienville Parish.....plenty of red dirt/mud.

Been really busy at work, so I haven't tackled removing the carb yet. But, I filled her up with fresh gas this past Sunday afternoon, and just rode around...…..fast, slow, all different scenarios.....seems like a good carb cleaning will do the trick.

Running pretty dang good.....just has that lil hesitation at low to 1/4 throttle, and responds really well at that point by "blipping" the choke slide for a split second.

Thanks for all of the advice and guidance to the carb cleaning write-up.

Here’s a couple pix of my VE90E from my 93 TRX300. See the tools I used to scrub the passages? Plus I used Berryman Chemtool fuel injector cleaner as a soak.
You’re going to want to ensure you have an OEM carb, it’s clean, and then you can tune it. If you don’t want to do it, take it to the shop. If you have a good shop in town, worth the money

i like those cotton cleaners, but am weary of leaving cotton fibers. used those many of a time. ive even used bread ties, without the paper on them, to get into some places. havent heard much about Berryman as yet though the stuff sold here, is not as good as before the EPA, an others who take care of you, whether you want it or not.:smile the GUM thing, i had not thought of,,, learn something new when ya can.

I just use the berryman Chem dip carb cleaner and let them
Soak. Wish I had an ultrasonic cleaner. Only thing I really use the q tips for it polishing the float seat. Put a little metal polish on one and stick it in a drill, does a nice job on the seat.

I hear you Ted about gallon carb cleaner not being as strong as it use to , but it is still pretty potent as I had a gallon can corrode the seams (lucky it was on the floor) and leak onto the floor in the shed , I doubt the can was much more than a year old , must have been the right temperatures and humidity in the shed for it to rust out like it did or maybe a faulty can

Goober , do you save that Berryman fuel injector fluid in a gallon can and reuse it ? Do you find it stronger ?

Hey FF.
Berryman chemtool has the same stuff as a lot of brake cleaners: toluene, methy-ethyl-ketone, methanol. Makes disposal a hazardous waste actually.

It will dissolve gaskets so not good for those old 200sx carbs—apply carefully with brush to avoid linkages

It lasts a long time but I typically don’t keep it. I bought an empty new gal paint can from Maynard’s and that’s what I use to soak stuff including petcocks, nuts, bolts, etc. When I’m done with the carb bowl and body cleaning (new) I use it for the hardware (old). It starts to get a lot of grit in it.

Then I dump it in an old pan and burn it off. Wipe out the can and ready for new.
