These pictures are from a Honda Fourtrax 300 repair manual, but they should be close to the same as your 4-wheeler. Same general procedure, anyway.

It doesn't really matter, since the crankshaft turns two revolutions to every, one revolution, of the camshaft. I would unbolt the cam sprocket and put the punch mark up, with the lobes facing down, anyway, since that's how it's supposed to be.I didnt realize this when I took the engine apart, but with the punch mark on the cam sprocket up , the cam lobes are facing up. I never removed the sprocket from the cam. is this going to cause problems ?
The position of the cam determines whether or not it's on the compression stroke, so all you have to do is put the piston on TDC by aligning the "T" mark on the flywheel and then just put the cam in with the lobes facing down and the punch mark straight up or down. It doesn't really matter if the punch mark on the cam is up or down. Lining up the two lines on the cam gear with the top edge of the head is all that matters.also how do I know for sure that it is on the compression stroke?
