Yes, the tensioner is replaceable, but the following shows how to install it. If it still doesn't tension the chain enough, you will need a new chain.

Thanks Helmut, do you know the part # or where to get the tensioner?
Bad news, I just tried to look up the part number for the tensioner and it seems that they have been discontinued. You might be able to locate one on Ebay.

The '87 had a different tensioner and it might fit, I'm not sure. The two tensioners look completely different, but the gasket looks like it's shaped about the same. The cylinder might be made the same where the tensioner bolts to it. Here is what the '87 tensioner looks like.

Yes, the '87 tensioner should work on the '85 cylinder, because the part numbers for both the '85 cylinder and the '87 cylinder are the same.

The part number for the '87 tensioner is Honda part #14520-HA0-771.

like helmut said..replacing the tensioner won't always solve your problem..if your timming chain is too far stretched..it won't matter how many tensioners you put on it..you still will need a new timming chain..the tensioners on these atv's hardley ever go bad..most times..it's the chain..or timming chain guides.
