I just bought an '87 trx 250. I've taken the engine apart due to low compression and thinking there's a timing problem. My question is. With the tensioner removed, should the cam chain be loose enough to lift off the cam gear? That is with the gear still bolted to camshaft? Another question. With the tensioner installed, should the cam chain be tight? Even with the tensioner installed, as I remember, the chain was very loose. I've checked the tensioner and seems to be okay.
This is my first time here and with working on these motors. Thanks for any help that comes my way!

Hello and welcome to the fourms. The chain should not be loose. If you are sure the tensioner is working properly then you have a bad chain.

I agree. Sounds like it's time for a new timing chain. Probably wouldn't be a bad ideal to change the timing chain guides, also.
