I've decided to sell my ZX10R and buy a couple more atv's...one for the kids and one for the wife (myself).

The one for the kids is easy...they're 8 & 10, so I'm gonna get them a 90.

The other one is not so easy. It won't actually be for the wife, I'll be the only one riding it until the kids get older. It's going to be a sport quad, she'll ride the Rancher when we go riding together.

What I need to know is, of the available Honda sport quads, which is best suited to trail riding (keep width requirements in mind)? I don't necessarily want an MX quad, I won't be racing, but I'm not opposed to one either...there is an MX track nearby that I would most likely be riding on. Will a trail oriented bike work well on the track for "spirited" riding? I also want something that I'm not going to have to be constantly wrenching on. Regular maintenance is fine, but I don't want to rebuild the motor every season.

What accessories are a must have? Nerf bars, handle bars, exhaust?

I don't own one but my suggestion would be the 400EX. It will be great for you when you want that extra power for playing on the track. I would suggest the nerf bars, I have them on my 250EX. Being that you had a bike with as much power that you are selling you probably wouldn't be satisfied with the 250EX if you are going to be riding at the track at all. If it was strickly a trail machine I would recomend the 250EX. Lots of power to play on and less maint. than the 400EX. Plus the kids will be ready for it alot sooner. With the sport clutch it is a great machine to teach newer riders how to use a clutch.

I think I like precision handling more than blazing speed. I like the power my 10R has, but would never put it on the track...my 6RR has much better handling. I want something light...that I can throw around corners. I want to be able to jump easily and do an occasional wheelie. I weigh about 200 lbs...how well would the 250 move me?

My 250EX has plenty of power for me and I weigh around 220. If you have tighter trails then it will be plenty good. On alot of the trails throught the woods that I ride on my 250 keeps up with the 400's because there are no places to use the extra speed of the 400. If you go with the 250 I would suggest changing the factory baloon tires and maybe adding rear wheel spacers. I have Kenda Knarlys on my and they do great.

The 250EX or newer X model is fine and dandy, but I think you will be wanting more from the machine. If your coming of a ZX6 and a ZX10, then you know power and you like having it. The 400EX or X would have enough power where you won't be trying to shift into more gears after fifth. I have a Z400, which is comparable in power and handling. The honda 400 is perfect for tight woods and any jump you would want to hit on the trail. You can take it too the track and mess around and it will do fine. When I first started riding I had a 2000 Honda Recon, motor and chassis as the 250EX, except the newer 250 has a sport clutch. I had a friend with a 250EX, and I accually preferred my recon because it had a tighter turing radius. And unless your really beating on it, you shouldn't have to rebuild anything on the 400 for a long time. I'm not trying to diss on the 250 at all, I just think a 400EX would be a better quad for you.

The 400's are a bit wider too aren't they? I'm actually leaning towards the 400 or even a 450R. Besides the obvious, what's the difference between the 450R and the 400X (why R or X)?

The 450r has a more powerfull motor, that is liquid cooled. It also has better suspension stock (400ex can be modified tho) and better handling. The 400 has a builet proof air cooled motor an is nearly maintenance free. It also has reverse ('06 and up) and will be a lot cheaper.

I went to the dealership last night. They have an 08 400EX, brand new, for $4900...I'm sold on it. The bike's on Craigslist...hopefully I can sell it before they sell the 400.
