I recently bought a 1990 trx300fw that was burning oil so I took it apart to t rebuild it, but when taking it apart I noticed that some prices of plastic were broken off of the timing chain guide. then when taking it apart fully some more pieces of plastic chipped of and fell into the engine. is this a big deal? What should I do?

Are you going to rebuild the engine — top end only? i think you’ll have to remove the right side case to replace the cam chain. Maybe you’ll find them down there by the oil pump intake

Don’t want them jamming your oil pump

Yes I was going to just rebuild to top end. Do I have to replace the cam chain?

Kindof a complicated job for first time, but ok.
You have to have the service manual and follow it.

Put parts from each component you remove into separate ziplock freezer bags and include a card where you write what’s in each bag. Don’t write on the bag—it will rub off.

It could be smoking from loose components in the top end, but could also be from worn rings.
Did it knock when you ran it?
Do you see evidence of mud or dirt in the carb or intake?
How did the oil look?
If you take off the right side case to do the cam chain and find a bunch of mud in with your plastic pieces, well your first rebuild is going to be much more fun.

There was no knock
No evidence of mud or dirt in the intake
The oil looked clean maybe a bit dark
