Good morning folks ,I have 2012 Honda Rancher 420,FM ,and when i apply parking brake or press foot lever the brakes lock up ,and I have to change direction of travel to keep them from dragging ,:I have cover open pads hardly have any wear and drum same thing ;any suggestions ??

Lube cables and make sure you haven’t got your brakes adjusted too tightly.

Have you replaced the shoes on it and maybe didn’t get thr adjustments right?

brake cables are seizing ?, or the brake cam is rusted over , and seizing ?.

once ya get the brake cam out, what is the grease, that you use, to keep it moving freely? i forget.

As others have mentioned it could be a seized cable or cam. Another likely candidate is worn parts. A worn out cam will round off and not return because it is pivoted too far for the spring tension on the shoes to do it. Also worn shoes and or drums will allow the cam to pivot too much and it can't return for the same reason.

You say hardly any wear ?? Can ya post us some pics ?? From what the fellas said, and your description (seizing) brake cam would be my thinking...

reminds of semi truck drum brake cam over.

That question could turn into an entire 300 post thread with some name calling -----
^^ very true! Let me settle this before it turns, into an oil thread. lol ...... Go with best grease.

All possibilities have been mentioned above. All I can ad is... You may get lucky and find that a good clean and light lubrication of the cam will cure the issue. Where the cam passed through the back plate there are seals, may be worth replacing them while you digging into it. Use waterproof grease on the cam where it passed through the back plate and anti-seize (copper grease) on any moving part within the brake assembly. Obviously not on the friction material or brake drum though lol

That question could turn into an entire 300 post thread with some name calling ----- a grease that is water proof would be my first concern , I like marine grease , anti-sieze would last for a while
i used permatex anti-sieze. didnt last as long as i though it would. too many water leaks i guess. still is the best for a breach plug or nipple, on a muzzle loader.
not to mention, exhaust connections... and spark plug threads.. Anti-seize copper grease, i got to look up...

Sounds like the time and a perfect excuse to get a rear disc brake conversion kit. Right?
