I recently purchased a 1984 Honda TRX200 quad. The guy I bought it from told me it has been sitting out in the elements for at least 5 years. Needless to say this is a project bike. I have stripped down the bike and I'm planning to do a restoration. The piston was seized and the valves are nice and rusty. All the brakes were seized up as well. I am wondering what 5 years of sitting does to the bottom end and final drive? I wouldn't think it would be nearly as bad as the top end; is there anything that I should do or not do when it comes to the bottom end?

It sounds like you've got a fun project on your hands. Its hard to say on the condition of your bottom end it would probably be a good idea to go through it and make sure its all okay. as for the final drive, as long as it has oil in it and no water it should be good to go.

Thanks for the reply! I was assuming that since the bottom end had oil in the case it would be less likely to have any contamination in it. I just didn't want to completely tear down the engine unless I absolutely had to. As for the final drive the only thing I have seen is some rusty bearings where the shaft is but that could just be on the outside.

Yeah, it sounds like you got lucky on that one. As I was tearing it down; everything is locked up. The throttle wouldn't move; the brakes were locked up. Everything on it I've had to bust loose. I've even come close to stripping some nuts and bolts trying to get them off. All in good fun. I'm the kind of person that wants to go ahead and fix everything right while I've got it apart. It will almost be like having a brand new 4 wheeler when it's all done.

with the cylinder off...see if you can turn the crank by hand ?..if not..you need to work some fresh oil in the lower end..drain it..keep doing this a few times..it don't take much..you can even use used oil..this will help wash out the rust amd water if there is any in it..after that..it's all about putting it back together.

Thanks for the tip!! I've got the cylinder off but I haven't taken the piston off yet. I haven't tried to move it because the cylinder has a good bit of rust on it so I have got rags stuffed in to prevent any junk from falling in. What other alternative can I flush out the bottom end with? Would Evaporust be okay?

if your crankshaft still turns freely i would just drain the old oil and put new in. once you get it back together, run it for a little while and then change the oil again. I've never heard of Evaporust before so i don't know if it would work or not.
