Okay guys, my younger brother has a 250x thats pretty well worn, but he loves it and I would like to help him fix it up. It has moose handle bars and dirt devil rear tires. So other than that its stock. We are headed to our local harescramble in about a month and I would like to know what all you guys would recommend doing to it. I have about $900-$1000 i can spend on it so please throw your suggestions at me.

Get a port and polish a good cam and a hmf exhaust. Also a 400ex carb will do a lot.

Agree^^^ Run a compression test just to see where the engine is sitting at whether it needs to be freshened up a bit. if so you can go with a STD 74.00 mm 11:1 piston kit from Wiseco without having to bore.

What ever you want to do to the engine is going to depend on his riding style and what he's looking to get out of it. I can tell you these 250 are extremely torqy and a blast to ride. i'm not a small fella and it carries my tail real well.
