On this Rubicon project I picked up the seller said it wasn't running right, would throw error codes whenever it got wet etc. Final straw for him was when the swingarm threads disappeared.

So I've gotten everything swapped over to a new/used frame. I soaked the carb in Berrymans and blew it out before putting it back on, and discovered the edges of the diaphram in the carb had ragged holes in them.

Luckily I had an extra carb so I robbed the diaphragm off of that one, (replacement is freaking $75!) but what would cause actual holes in the rubber? Is that from a backfire or ?

Just need a battery, bleed the brakes, get the front and side fenders put on, and get the winch wires run and the front bumper with winch mount installed and I'll be ready to give her a test run.

Hi jeep
Yup
could be from a backfire or overuse of carb cleaner–or both. That carb cleaner or maybe even use of brake cleaner–has acetone and other compounds very unfriendly to the rubber.

Maybe ethanol gas fumes , LOL , no seriously -----or maybe the guy sprayed carb cleaner
to try and clear a clog , sprayed it thru the throat of the carb while engine running it and some got on the rubber , maybe someone soaked the carb in cleaner and never disassembled the diaphragm

Ah, yeah that's probably it.

He told me a couple of months ago that his overflow was leaking. I told him to take the carb off and clean it well.

He's not much on wrenching, so he probably just hosed it down with carb cleaner.

Glad I had an extra carb! Those things are pricey!

Manny , thought me about the blown diaphragm , my 300 wouldn't go past 1/2 throttle and fall flat on it's face ------- in my case I almost did not see the problem as it was cracked around the base where it attaches to the slide , you had to pull the rubber to see it , stuck another one in and it ran great -----I didn't realize they cost so much , never price one before

Talking about expensive carbs , I bought a used 300 1st gen carb with the right code on side the body , which looked great in the pics , from a place in Texas and gave $175 for it , it didn't workout for me , it was clean looking , didn't perform , cleaned it several times and never ran right ---------- Manny pulled me thru again and sent me a 1st gen carb at a great price , rebuilt that one and all was good

Ya, I agree with those guys ^^^ it probably got hit with chemicals at some point in time, would be my guess. Ethanol could do it too if it were ever wetted down with it.
the 46 ford tractor needed a shiftier knob cover. i couldnt get the new one it to stretch over, to fit. so i got the bright idea of soaking it in gas, so it would stretch. i let it soak some. when i got it out, it was harder than an 8 ball.:eek: i couldnt find the stupid icon..
