My father-in-laws little Yamaha (I KNOW HUH - HA!) 350 has been running fine and all of a sudden it starts revving high when you put in neutral. Seems to run normal in first through fourth gear. What you think?

Try cleaning the carb, might be running lean.

Agree^^^^ also check the throttle cable for pinches, scuffs or stiffness in the cable.

What type of bike is it? Hows the clutch and tranny oil? The only thing placing any drag on the motor when you shift from neutral to 1st with the clutch held in the entire time are the clutch plates, if they were creating more friction than usual something like that could happen, maybe check the clutch cable too, but I would rule out fuel and air delivery problems first as suggested.

also, does it rev when turning the handle bars?? alot of times the cable gets pinched?? process of elimination.. My 350 warrior did this..

I haven't had a change to get back over to his place to look at it but it didn't seem to be a problem with the cables. When you were in first gear and second gear and riding around it was normal but the minute you down shift it to neutral it would rev real fast (so fast you could not shift it into reverse). We'd have to turn off the key and restart it and shift it right away before the revs go too high.

First off I realize this thread is old; however, there is no answer and it comes up when I google my issue. Hopefully, I can provide a confirmed solution.

I got the same problem with Honda ATC 110 Model 1984. When I drive in gear it's fine drop to neutral and it revs way up. Also noticed if it's rev'ed there is noticeable lag before it idles down again. That being said, I think it could be the old throttle cable sticking. I'm replacing it and if it fixes it I will post that.

I also realize this thread is ancient but I'm having the same issue with my '82 ATC 110 and as you said there is no answer :(
If I get it figured out I'll update
