It all depends on the brand, tread pattern, and surfaces you ride on.
Also depends on if you want radial tires, or bias ply tires.
Radial will give you a softer ride, while bias ply tend to hold up to more abuse.
Do you ride mud? Sand? Snow? Hard pack trails?
ITP Holeshot's and MAXXIS RAZR's tend to be the most popular all around tires.
I just picked up 2 Traxion SnowMax rear tires (Maxxis 4Snow reps) for $55 a tire, and 2 Traxion Racer XC front tires (Maxxis Razr 2 reps) for $55 a tire.

You just can't beat the price & quality of the GBC XC Masters. I'm not sure about the size you need for the 400 & 300ex's?
