Greetings,

I have some stock steel wheels on my 92 trx300fw with some pretty nasty edges on the rims (from previous owners abuse). The tires still seal but I am afraid that it will be a pain when I go to mount up new tires. Can these be repaired or am I looking at replacing them.

I am also looking for some advice on a taller tire. I have decided to go with Mudlites but was wandering how tall of a tire I can mount. I do have a 2in lift kit so I have the fender clearance.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

To repair wheels you have two options. You can beat the edge as straight as possible with a chisel (ground to shape) or cut the lip off the edge of the rim and replace it with 1/4” bar.
The first option is of course the easiest and most common approach.

As for tyres, a 26” mudlite would be fine, anything above 26” and you WILL need a gear reduction.

Edit: When I say ‘replace with 1/4” bar’, I mean you have to bend 1/4” bar the the size of the rim and then weld it to the wheel.
Takes a long time but looks neat when it’s done.

You can beat the dents out but if they are stock 11" wheels you are honestly better off upgrading to 12" wheels like ITP deltas to open up more tire options. Nobody wants to be stuck running mudlites lol You can run 25's or 26's but I would not go taller. Whether you run the same height front and rear or stagger them like stock is up to you, personally I typically just run the same front and back so I can use them on another machine if need be...

I have always just beat my stock wheel back into shape with a hammer LOL
and then if any sharp edges file/grind them off
been good now for 20 yrs almost?
if any burr's or such are there when tires are OFF< before installing new one's again, just file them down so no damage happens

I still; have 11 inch wheels on all 4 tires on mine, tires last me a long time? I think mine now are about 11 yrs old and still at about 50% tread and about 5,000+ miles on them?

Interesting. Do you have any pics of this being done or what it looks like after the mod? If not I am looking to get a set of good used rims. Take offs from an upgrade possibly.
I don’t have any pictures unfortunately but I have however seen it done a few times in the past. It’s not something that catches your eye when you look at a wheel though. Imagine your original rim ‘lip’ (edge) but it’s just solid not ‘U’ shaped.
If you go this route, your don’t need to cut off the lip flush with the rim, just half of it, that then gives you some shape to follow when shaping your 1/4” bar. You simply tack one end in place and then work your way around, shape, tack, shape, tack and so on.

A friend made this lip straightener for me. I’ve used it on 12 wheels sofar and works great. You have to use a rounded edge or you will cut the metal.

I just today dropped of my original TRX300 wheels for media blast and powdercoat in Adventure Green. $200. I couldn’t buy wheels cheaper than that!

Ok if the inside bead surface is very pitted you can braise it and build it up or use tubes in your tires.

Sounds like a lot of work, how much do new wheels cost, or are they nla? Last pair I purchased off eBay from atv galaxy was $95 shipped for black powdered coated .190 DWT Wheels.

92 300 FW , I have a 92 also ," my brother from another mudda " ----- I just put some new to me tires and rims on it ----------- if I were you , I would get a set of 12 inch rims all the way around , and run something like 25x 8 or 10 in the front and 25 x 10 or 12 in the rear , the 300 will handle the 25's well , 12 inch rims gets you more options of tires and disc conversion ready ------ if you look around there are always deals on a used set , sometimes in very good condition as people buy new bikes and change the tires quickly to something bigger , or the buy them and they don't work for their application , the dealers around here sell take offs for $200 a set ----also as far as thread pattern , talk with people who ride in the type of soil conditions you ride in , what works for some doesn't do as well for others ----kind like talking to a elk hunter for advice on hunting deer

Nice wheels @Mac; a new set of Carlisles would look stunner eh

BTW My 93 300 is sporting an older set of Carlisles–on some rusty pitted 300 rims. How do I check the manu date and @mrbb does it matter how old tires are if they look good? What defects start to develop?

My tire date code says 3607 so Sep ‘97?
Edit I think I’m reading it wrong Sep ‘07?

age of tire doesn't always tell the story, yes age will lessen a tire, things to look for will be dry rot, cracking or such, but 10+ yrs on atv tires NOT kept in the sun isn;t that long a life , I would think they would last 20 yrs if kept right or more
another thing could be FLAT spots as if it sat for a LONG time in one spot, they can form memory to being flat in one spot, and or completely damaged if left FLAT for a long time, as the weight of the machine can cut into the tires with the wheels, but on atv's that get used every so often and store out of the elements, just visual looking is all I would do, if they look dry and cracking, then there on there way out or are already bad!

I know the tires on my old 1949 model H tractor were from about the early 60's, they had some cracking, but they never leaked air and I ran them, used tractor a few times every yr from the time I got it(90's) till I sold it in 2015,
NOW< If this was a street tire, then I would be a LOT more likely to replace on AGE alone, but atv's speeds and such , are not a huge heat up factor and I ain';t that worried about a blow out, most of all my riding is rather slow goings.
these Honda's ain
t speed demons by any means, they ain't like Mac's can am 1000 LOL
something like that I again might be more sensitive to age of a tire

visual inspection is all I go by on atv's
mine look just fine to me minus wear and tear, but NO dry rot or the likes as of yet

Looks like @duckswamper could sell his on to someone who will find time to mess with them.
Mac on those new ITP deltas how do you adjust brakes just take off the wheels?
Yes you have to pull the wheel off, which isn't a big deal since nobody ever adjusts their brakes and by the time they figure out they should they have to pull the drums off and unseize the adjusters anyway LOL
