welcome to the forums. it won't start unless it is in neutral. in other words, the neutral light on the dash has to be lit up. 200 bucks is a steal, kinda makes me wonder what all is wrong with it ?, IS IT STOLEN ??!!..LOL. check the vin number, MAKE SURE IT'S THERE !!. is this a manual shift ?, or electric shift ? ( don't recall when Honda started electric shifts for this model ? ).

Yes it's a manual shift as far as I know from the research I've done. Definitely going to check the VIN number, I do this with every four wheeler I buy, if it was on Craigslist I would be more concerned. He said he brought it to a shop to have it inspected and they told him it needs engine work, but that shop could have also been trying to pull one over on him. I told him I definitely want it as long as everything checks out.

they are simple engines to work on. for the price ?, you will come out great from the gate ?, but if it requires an engine over haul ?, well..it's gonna add up !..lol. keep us posted .

Will do, any kind of work done on it I'll do myself so I'll save some money there. I have around a month before the next planned ride, I'll figure it out eventually

yep, if you do the work yourself ?, you will save a lot of cash !. been doing it this way for 20 years or so ?, love wrenching !. your in good hands here on the forums, lots of great members .

nice atv, but that is not a trx250 recon ?, that is a trx250ex if i'm not mistaken ?. in other words, it's a sport atv, not a utility .

Well got it home, put some gas and tried to start. At first it was just clicking. Hooked up a battery charger and it tries to turn over but there's a knock. Knock gets louder when the choke is on. Any ideas?

hard to tell with out it running ?, there is a lot of noise going on !..lol. clanking, clunking, rattling, but to answer your knocking sound ?, most times this is a crank rod problem. if this is the case ?, well..unless your loaded with extra cash ?, the motor is a complete tear down, and rebuild ?, or you sell it, get another atv, or , part it out to re-coop your money ?, now the $ 64,000.00 question is, which way do you wanna go ?..lol.

That's what I was worried it was - I will probably search for a used engine to swap into it. What other models/years fit this quad?

I can't help you on your question ^^ ?, I don't know much about sport atvs ?, but if you look up that year and make ?, and see where they first made them ?, to when they last made them ?, then you will get an idea on what you will be looking for . knowing Honda ?, any year they made and sold them ?, i'd bet not much changed on them ?, don't know why any year of that model can't just bolt right in ?, but again, i'm no expert on those models ?..sooo..your call .

Looks as if the Recon 250 engine is the exact same as the 250ex engine. Hopefully that is the case, will save me a little money on a used bottom end

make sure to compare part numbers !!, just because they look the same ?, does not mean the electronics are all the same ?!. this would be a problem !..lol.
