I tried finding info and have come up with nothing. I am not a big fan of spools or the DGL for that matter. I would much rather something simple like the cable operated selectable unit on other machines. I mean, yeah the DGL will work but I know it will make the quad steer harder in both 2 and 4 wheel drive which is completely unnecessary. Why is it so difficult to build a locker that locks the 2 front tires via either a manual cable or electric switch. Once I am no longer needing the lock release it and go back to an open diff for all I care.

The limited slip in this machine is pretty useless. I have yet to find a situation where it did anything other than act like a typical open differential. The torque biasing doesn't work like a typical unit I have dealt with in cars. If I lose traction on one tire the thing should shift the power to the other...... This thing doesn't. The one with the least resistance spins like crazy and the other does nothing. Playing with the front brakes is ineffective as well. A locker would make the trails I run much easier to navigate, we play in a lot of muskeg.

If anyone has found anything out there I missed I would love to know. But I fear I already know what my options are. Thanks!

I believe they discontinued the Warn 4-2-4 Select before they started making the 420 Rancher, but I could be wrong. It has to be for the exact kind of 4-wheeler or it won't fit.

Never mind, that's not what he's asking for anyway. He's looking for a selectable locker to lock the front diff. The Warn 4-2-4 Select doesn't lock the diff, it just makes 4wd selectable and the 420 Rancher does that from the factory.

i wroked on a 2000 rancher just the other day..it had a 424 selector on it. it was a 350 rancher..soo..i'm pretty sure the 350's and 420 didn't change much in thier engine design ?..could be wrong though.

A Warn 4-2-4 Select for a 350 Rancher won't work on a 420 Rancher. They are ATV specific. But that's not what he's looking for anyway. He's looking for a selectable locker to lock the diff. The Warn Select doesn't lock the diff, it just makes the ATV selectable from 2wd to 4wd and the 420 already does that from the factory.

If you ask me, Honda is starting to fall behind in the utility line. Yamaha has had selectable lockers since 2002. And yes, Shadetree, I know this isn't a Yamaha forum. LMAO.

Yeah the 424 is basically a sliding coupler on a driveshaft that allows you to disengage 4wd on the older machines that were full time. Of course my 420 is selectable as 2 and 4 wheel so that's all good :).

I want to lock my front tires together when I need it. The thing is though, I don't always need that advantage. I don't just trail ride machine and play in mud holes, I use it at home on my acreage and bomb down the road with it. It would be nice to still keep the light steering effort in 2wd. I guess I should have bought an 09 or a 2010 for power steering but that's not the issue. The steering is quite effortless as is and my butt gets tired when I play long before my arms do. I really like this machine and it's running great with the tune and the pipe. It just needs more aftermarket if the OEM in this instance won't provide a selectable locking front differential. It's a simple system usually, just a matter of locking one axles side gear to the carrier would lock the diff.

I have thought of something else I may try for the heck of it. Most of the time when I need a locker I am usually articulated and one front tire is off the ground. If a person installed a pair of normally open solenoids ( one on each front brake line) you could apply the brakes, energize the solenoid on the wheel in the air which would close it, locking that wheels brake on( like a linelock) and release the brake handle. This of course should force power to the other wheel and at least get you moving. Maybe I will have to try that.

That or go with the Detroit I guess.

ok..i understand what your saying about the front differental now....i know my '89 trx350d foreman has the limited slip built into the front differental..and it's suppose to work like your talking about..when you loose traction on one side..its suppose to transfer the traction to the other side that is not off the ground..i haven't tested this yet..as it's kinda hard to ride and watch the front as you do this...lol...i know one thing..i've had mine tore apart..and it's a job trying to figure it out if you don't have a service manual..lmfao..and yeah helmut..this is a honda forum !!..lmfaooo..i simply love that comment..you just can't let it go !..lmfaoooooooo.
