Hello all, just signed up to learn a bit about my Honda Foreman. I have a couple of problems with it. First is.....the starter is "shot" (the second one :icon_cussing: ), it seems to get condensation in it then corodes and eats the bearings & sticks the brushes,second..... the Temp. light is staying on (even on start up with a cold engine) intermittently.
So thats my story and I'm sticking to it !!!

welcome to the forums steve, your starter brushes are some how getting water into it probally from bad o-rings that surounds it ??..just a guess on that..i've never had a starter problem like yours. if your temp light stays on all the time, i would say your temp sensor is bad..unplug it from the temp sensor..does the light go off ??...if it does..touch it to the engine to ground it..does the light come back on ??.if it does..your temp sensor is bad.

Thanks for the "welcome" shadetree.
The frustrating thing about the starter is that the machine is NEVER out in dirty weather ( I'm allergic to rain !!:icon_ goofy: ), and it is not a swamper so it see's very little water. The best I could come up with is the condensation theory as it is stored in a unheated shop.
Not sure where to look for the sensor on this machine, it's a 1997 TRX400. Does anyone have the service manual for it ??

your welcome..did you look in the manual section on this sight ??..if there sin't one there..helmut more than likely has one for you..he'll pop in sooner or later. from the micro i looked at..your oil temp sensor is in the back bottom of the engine..i'm guessing your oil temp light is the light comming on ?

as for your starter..some how..it got water inside it..and never was cleaned out..most starters don't just build up condersation over time..they either have bad o-ring seals that go around them..and leak ( if it was sunk before you got it ? )..or you just got a bad starter to begin with.

Welcome to the forums. I've never had a starter problem like that either and I agree with Shadetree on the oil temp light. Check it like Shadetree said, but if it's not the oil temp sensor, your alarm unit/control unit might be bad. Also, I'm sending you a private message.

Thanks for the link Helmut, I tore the starter down & got it working (although the front bearing is a bit "gritty") so I'll use it as-is & when it "grenades" I'll replace it (OEM this time !). When the manual download finishes I'll have a look & see about the Temp unit issue.
Thanks again guys.
