I recently picked up a 1996 TRX300FW in fairly good shape and started refurbishing it. One thing I noticed that concerned me was there seems to be a lot of side to side play of the rocker arms on the pins between the head casting - enough to move it visibly with your fingers. I have the Honda and Clymer workshop manuals, but no tolerance is given for this, just for the rocker i.d., pin o.d. and slop.

I measured the gap with a feeler gauge and it's .020 on both arms.

Can anybody shed some light on this??

Don’t quote me in this as it’s been a while since I referred to the FSM but I’m sure the gaps are 0.006 and 0.008.. 6 & 8 certainly stick in my mind, may be worth your while flicking through the FSM and double checking that valve clearances are correct.

The side to side (end float) is normal, all I’ve seen have had a lot of movement.
