My XR is making me loose weight over here! ? I recently replaced the piston, rings, sleeve, valve stems and springs. Bike won't turn over from kicking, it acts like it wants to but doesn't. I pull started and it ran briefly while giving a little throttle. Since it ran do you think I still have a compression problem?

Check the normal. Fuel, spark, air. Start with a shot of starting fluid in the intake tube. Will it pop off on that? If yes you have a fuel problem. Clogged carb. Bad fuel shut off. Gas cap vent clogged. Something along those lines. If it still dosnt pop off on starting fluid go to spark. You should smell gas when kicking it over in this case. Remove the plug and hold it to the side of the motor or frame or what have you and see if you have a good fat blue spark. If you have spark then do a compression test. Now it is possible the flywheel woodruff key is sheared. Not super likely but possible. This would make it spark at the wrong time and not start.

After addressing the initial compression issue with a new piston turns out one of the valve stems was very slightly bent, enough to keep it open. Replaced those and it was a matter of figuring out the valve adjustments. The exhaust needed to be a little slacker and intake to spec.... No smoke from the tailpipe a lil smoke seems to be burning off by the exhaust but I think its from sitting so long

One of you guys mentioned that sometimes you have to back off on the valves a little. I backed off all of them at 1st, it started acting like it wanted to turn over every kick just wouldn't quite do it. So I figured enough gas mix wasnt getting in so I tighten the intake to spec and BINGO!
