Original problem, no charge. Running fine. Little hard to start, but once started ran fine. After checking, stator showed bad. Replaced stator and pulse generator while having it apart. Also took bowl off carb while it was out, done a mediocre cleaning. New air filter. Everything back together, checked my readings on stator and pulse, right with manual. Here's problem, when cranking now it acts like it's out of time. Like it fires only a quarter of every stroke. And it's somewhat loud when it does. Louder, little more violent then usual. I've double checked everything, it doesn't appear changing stator has any to do with timing. Does this sound like I've got a problem with carb

first off welcome to the site
if this is a motor with a lot of miles.hard use,(how many miles /hours on motor) its very possible it did jump timing, them chains stretch and will loosen and things can jump?
sounds like you have your answer, but was just hoping for something else maybe LOL

I have a 2002 450 , I fought a lot of demons along the way to get it running well , it has been gone thru from the crankshaft up --------one thing along the way was carb problems , I foolishly bought a Chinese carb and that never did get right , finally broke down and bought a brand new OEM carb and was amazed how it was an instance fix

I would start with a compression test , if timing is an issue you will see it with a compression test , that model engine has a decompression mechanism , so read the manual and do the right procedure for testing or your results will not be accurate , I would check the timing marks against top dead center , check valve adjustments , try to do a deeeep clean on the carb

My bad, I should've gave a little more info. It's got 1754 mileage. It's been a one owner from day one. Never really abused, just used around the guys house for small farm work. Was serviced/maintained regularly. I did notice last night, I had the fuel on reserve. Moved it to on position. Fuel started coming from the bowl I'm assuming(bottom side of carb). I'm hoping, that the problem lies in there somewhere. Even though it shoes signs of timing, I really can't figure when it would've jumped being as it ran fine before new stator was installed. I've got a manual downloaded, I'll see what the process is to check compression. The way you worded it, sounds like not as simple as pulling plug and hooking up gauge. Thanks for the help though, appreciate it.

Also, is there anyway to upload a short video on here to give a better idea of what it's doing. I'm not the best explainer
put it on YouTube and then put the link here

Back to square one. I found two problems before starting compression check. One, only one side of the air cut off valve tube was connected. Second, the spark plug was about loose, went problem half dozen more turns before turning. Tried cranking after correcting those two, it tried to hit a few times. Had some hope. Put fuel tank on, nothing. Not even trying at this point. Checked spark, no spark....swapped coils...nothing. Checked reading from the "new" pulse generator, suppose to be 350 to 500 ish, showed twenty eight. Got the factory one I took out, showing 386. I shouldn't have changed it but figured while I was in there it wouldn't hurt. I'm the blame on that, bought a cheap one from an Amazon seller. Super frustrated

I soldered the factory pulse in line with new harness, bolted everything back just now. It fired up like a champ. So to the original problem, I was over thinking it. By doing so, over looked some simple issues, with the vent tube and plug. Kinda one of those times you can't see the forest because of the trees lol.

also keep in mind if your float is sticking, or?? make sure you keep an eye on your oil, if it smells like fuel,, you need to change it ASAP, fuel in oil is common when a float sticks and well, fuel in oil will ruin seals and parts due to it stop proper lubrication diluting the oil and the chemicals in fuel!

It was a bad decision. Same day I ordered the pulse, I ordered a new cdi...from Honda lol. It works fine of course just like any other factory part I've replaced. There's a few times I've had good luck with cheaper aftermarket, very few. Agree totally with you.
