I'm still trying to get ahold of some PDF manuals for this quad. It belongs to a friend, but has been under my deck for a few years, so today I dragged it out, took the battery off the tender and spent a few hours getting it running.

Squirrels had built a nest in the airbox. I got that all cleaned out, and ordered a new air filter. I made sure there were no obstructions anywhere in the air path.

At that point it would fire up, but instantly die. After draining the carb and filling the tank with fresh gas (I didn't drain it completely, which of course I should have), I got it to idle fairly well with the choke on, but even once it was warm it would eventually stall. The stalling seemed violent, like it was kicking back pretty hard all of a sudden.

Eventually I realized that it seemed so violent because the carb was actually detaching from the cylinder head!

That's when I gave up for the day. I'm trying to find a manual to describe how it's supposed to be attached, as it doesn't look like the normal "2 screws, one on each side" kind of thing. Maybe it's just a clamp? Maybe this clamp is bad? The screws on them were pretty bad (I had to cut the screw on the clamp holding the airbox hose to the carb), and just needs to be replaced.

My youngest is riding a crx50 now, so we're going to get this and an older Lakota running and trailer them to some trails nearby this summer. Today was his first day riding trails, which was a beautiful moment. I'm 6'4" and 240lbs, so I look and feel a little ridiculous riding that little 50 through the woods... But it can definitely pull me along. Pretty impressive.

Welcome! Sounds like you’re figuring it out. I don’t think we have any sport quad service manuals in this site but click the parts link in my signature block. You will be able to find and purchase the correct missing/failed parts. I’ve taken a screenshot of the area of interest.

The 99 honda 400ex had a 2 part carb boot that liked to seperate. They quickly updated to fix the problem is 2000+. I have seen one personally and it didnt make any sense to me how they thought it would ever work. The carb side of the boot just slides into the metal bolt on part with no seals of any kind. The new one will be all one piece that bolts in with 3 bolts to the head. They are 8mm and the bottom one can be a real pain to get out. Welcome to the forums!

No need to replace the carb, get a rebuild kit and clean it really good. Blow out all passages and reassemble. Super easy. It will run great for years to come. Get a quality 4-stroke oil and service everything you can. These quads (like my 87 250x) are very reliable, durable, and easy to work on. Ours has a quiet OEM exhaust, stock airbox, plenty fast enough to hurt you. 11 yr olds especially. If he wants more wheel popping takeoff, swap a sptoket.
