Hello all,
I recently purchased a 98 300trx 4wheel drive. It was smoking really bad when I got it, but the guy said it just had the top end done (rings, piston, etc)
I know that in the breakin time, some smoke is possible, but it was ridiculous!
So I decide to tear into it 'cause I thought he might have aligned the rings wrong....sure enough...they were almost line up together instead of staggered.

Here is my new problem...putting it all back together, Im having a heck of a time trying to keep the T mark aligned while trying to get the cam sproket and chain back together and also lined up as the manual states...the manual I have (clymer) seems very vague on these instructions. Do you have any tricks or tips, as Im about to pull my hair out with it !!! Thanks, JT

I've never had any problems with that, but here are the instructions from the factory Honda repair manual. Maybe they will help.

Helmut, you do give some awesome info and I greatly appreciate it ! I will give this a shot and let you know
if it worked for me. The problem was really trying to get the chain back on the sprocket and then back onto the cam shoulder.
Everytime I tried, the crankshaft would keep moving because the chain was too hard / tight to put on and Id inadvertantly rotate the chain.
Im hoping that I was a bit frustrated the last go around, and maybe the chain was just not aligned on the cam chain drive gear. IDK, but keep your fingers crossed for me :)

Good luck. Just take your time, patience is key.
