New to the forum here and have a problem. My 98 fourtrax hadnt been ridden in a month or more and after i charged the battery back up, the thing would not start. So, i take off the carb, take it all a part, blow all the fuel and vaccum lines clear, cleaned up the float and needle valve. The needle valve was the problem for the starting. Now it starts fine but i am forced to choke it in order for it to keep running under idle. Under about half throttle, the engine hesitates some, but under full throttle there is not problem whatsoever. I have a feeling I messed up something with the rubber piece that connects to the top of the cylindrical plastic vaccum piece in the center of the carb. I am stumped because Ive taken off the carb 3 times now and cleaned it out and it still has problems. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I believe i got all the passageways. I took the whole thing completely apart twice now and blew out all the passages i could find. It seems like each time I took it apart and back together, the engine behaved a little differently each time. Kind of like i solved one problem but there still is another one to fix.

It's real easy to miss something when cleaning a carb, just a tiny piece of debris will cause you problems. You may have to remove all the rubber pieces from the carb body and soak it in some carb cleaner. It doubt if you damaged the rubber vacuum piston in the top of the carb unless you tore it, but that would be easy to see.

I just went through this with my 99 trx 300. It turned out the idle circuit and another circuit was plugged up solid (it had been sitting for 2-3 years when I bought it).
I used a Clymer service manual which had step by step instructions with great pictures and would suggest you get one just so you don't miss anything.

your idle jet is stoped up..it doesn't take much to mess up the jet..also..like helmut said..make sure you didn't tear the top gasket..if and when you get it right..a simple little inline fuel filter between your gas tank and carb will save you a headace down the road.

Something similar happened to me when I had my carb apart.
It turned out ( which I didn't know till I read the manual ) but when you reinstall the top on the carb, you have to align the tab on the vacuum cup and tab on the top of the carb. My bike acted all up. I didn't realize I had the top on wrong. Double check you have aligned the tabs up.
Once I corrected that it was all good.

Yep, you are correct. I was wondering about the pilot jet if it was stopped up, so I took it to a shop and they said yea it is. So I just ordered a new one and hopefully that does the trick.
