When you push the red button in and pull back the brake lever, that pulls a cable that is attached to a reverse lockout lever on the back of the engine. It must be out of adjustment.

Are you the original owner? If not, then the previous owner may have adjusted the cable to where it holds the lever up all the time or wired the lever up. Also, someone may have removed the cable to work on it and they might not have adjusted it properly when they put it back on.

That's usually the first mod I do to a Honda 4-wheeler. I adjust the cable up so it will hold the lever up all the time. That way I can put it in reverse without having to push the red button and pull the lever. I can be backed up and turned around and gone while everyone else is still fiddling with their little red buttons. LOL.
